Prostate Cancer Treatment

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

One of the ailments that millions of men face annually is Prostate Cancer. This type of cancer manifests itself in a variety of ways, and showcases several symptoms, but if caught early enough is treatable and easily conquered.

The symptoms of prostate cancer include, trouble urinating, decrease stream of urine, blood in the urine, blood in the semen, swelling in the legs, and discomfort of the pelvic area. At first signs of any of these, men should consult their doctor to make sure that this is taken care of. There is a prostate cancer treatment program that can be utilized to help treat this type of cancer and get life back to normal.

The first major type of Prostate cancer treatment is chemotherapy. Due in large part to the fact that the cells in this form of cancer grow slowly, most men find that chemotherapy is quite effective, and while it can damage healthy cells as well, the process can be relatively difficult to go through, but it has been proven effective prostate treatment in a majority of cases.

Prostate surgery is one of the oldest methods to treat this type of disease. It involves the removal of the entire process and in many cases the seminal vesicles and the nerves around it. The urethra is also rerouted and can lead to a shortening of the penis.

It’s important for men to get a physical, including an examination of the prostate to ensure that an enlarged prostate is not an early warning sign of cancer. Doctor’s cannot only catch this type of disease early; they can treat it, with little likelihood of recurrence.

Radiation Therapy Benefits in Prostate Cancer Treatment

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Once diagnosed, a prostate cancer patient may have a difficult time deciding on a course of treatment. Prostate surgery may be an option, but prostrate cancer treatment does not need to include surgery.

New studies show that radiation therapy can provide effective prostate cancer treatment, particularly in the early stages of the disease.

Radiation therapy has been shown to be as effective a solution as surgery in prostate cancer treatment. The radiation treatment may be given by external beam, and each treatment only takes about ten minutes. The therapy is given five days a week over six to eight weeks. The patient can also have radiation “seeds” implanted, in which case they will feel more discomfort but the process will be over sooner. Possible side effects are impotence with five years of treatment, and temporary burning on urination, urinary frequency and possible rectal bleeding short-term. However, avoiding surgery means avoid surgical risks such as infection, incontinence, and exposure to hospital illnesses during an extended stay. Also external beam radiation prostate cancer treatment does not involve the risks of anesthesia, an important consideration especially in patients who have previously diagnosed respiratory illnesses.

Other prostate treatment options are “watch and wait” for elderly patients, and hormone therapy, which carries many unpleasant side effects including osteoporosis and extreme fatigue. Thus, radiation therapy affords much more ability for the patient to continue with their normal activities, with a high rate of cure.

Do You Need Prostate Surgery? You Do Have Options

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a man has prostate surgery? It can be devastating. Prostate cancer treatment can turn a man’s world upside down. For many men their sex life fuels their self confidence. If they are unable to perform sexually it can deflate the strongest ego. But there is hope. Depending on the severity of the prostate problem and the stage at which it is detected the sufferer can choose from a variety of treatments. They can range from prostatectomy or cryosurgery if it is caught in the early stage, to orchiectomy if it is diagnosed in the advanced stage.

Located at the base of the bladder and encircling the urethra, the prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland produces an alkaline secretion that is one of the components of semen. When a man has trouble with his prostate gland it can affect his ability to urinate, procreate or even have sexual intercourse. It can also be very painful. Prostate surgery is usually seen as a last resort for many men because of the effect it can have on the sex drive. It can wreck havoc with a man’s ability to have or maintain an erection. Prostate treatment can also lower or destroy a man’s libido, leaving him with little interest in sex. It can destroy families.

Nonsurgical cures for prostate problems are what most men hope for. But if all else fails the prostate must be removed.

Options for prostate cancer treatment

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

It is often difficult to know what the options are for treating prostate cancer. The options available for prostate treatment include radiation therapy which uses energy beams like x-ray to eliminate prostate cells. Prostate surgery requires removing the prostate gland, and some tissues around the lymph nodes.

The type of cancer treatment you choose will depend on the cancer itself. If the cancer is fast growing; you would not choose therapy that only watches the tumor.

If you choose prostate surgery to treat your cancer; then you will have the choice of robotic surgery, or traditional surgery. Surgery with the robot is performed by a surgeon, and is consdered to be a less invasive. Prostate surgery done manually is just as effective, and lowers the rist of incontinence, and erectile dysfunction.

Prostate cancer treatment may also involve hormone therapy. Since testosterone levels of men with prostate cancer are high; hormone treatment is recommended to reduce the level of testosterone.

Other prostate treatment involves chemotherapy, which is typically used to treat advanced forms of the disease that has spread to other parts of the body. Cryotherapy is another prostrate treatment that requires a procedure that uses a freezing technique.

Patients who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer will have to weigh all the factors. Whether you choose prostate surgery, or any other prostate cancer treatment; your doctor will discuss, and arrange consultations with specialists. You and your doctor can then choose the best prostate treatment for you.

Prostate cancer treatment can help save a life

Prostate cancer treatment will depend on what stage the cancer is in. The cancer stage is determined by cancer growth and how dissimilar it is from the surrounding tissue makes determining the stage possible. Hormone therapy is used to block testosterone from being produced. This is a primary way of treating prostate cancer. However, even when hormone levels are low, some cancers still grow.

When the prostate cancer is slow growing it helps prolong the patient’s life, as well as there being more advanced prostate treatments these days. Prostate surgery results depend on the skill of the surgeon. Some complications and side effects can be injury to the rectum and incontinence.

After prostate cancer treatment or radiation treatment sometimes there are fibroid tissues or inflamed cells. So surgery and radiation treatment both have their risk of side effects. Hormone therapy has been used as well but the side effects are severe and the treatment does not work for all. Surgery for prostate cancer involves removal of the prostate which is a donut shaped gland, which is located between the urethra and the base of the penis. Sometimes the cancer treatment requires removal of the testicles. This causes the level of testosterone production to drop.

Prostate treatment can be a surgery or other means can be used, depending on what the surgeon thinks is best. Every individual case is different and so too will be each individual prostate cancer treatment.

My friend was concerned, so he urged me to get a checkup.

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

A good friend of mine had prostate surgery 3 years ago, and his prostate cancer treatment was successful. He’s been urging me to have my prostate tested, and it’s really good advice, but I’ve been having trouble making myself take it. I have a fear of doctors and I always try to avoid hospitals, so I haven’t been listening to my friend. I know that prostate treatment is much more successful when you catch the disease early, but for some reason I still can’t get myself to make an appointment.

I have a family history of prostate cancer, and two of my uncles have had prostate surgery. Both surgeries were successful, but one had a much easier time with his prostate cancer treatment, and he was the one who caught it earliest. I’ve been thinking about those two cases, and I’m almost ready to take my friends advice and get a checkup. I would hate to find out that I had prostate cancer, and then discover that it was too late for any effective prostate treatment.

My wife has also been concerned, and she knows many people who’ve had prostate surgery. She is afraid that I will eventually need prostate treatment, and she wants any prostate cancer treatment that I need to be as successful as possible. Her concern is really hitting home, and I hate to see her worried, so I’ll probably set up an appointment for next month. I don’t have any symptoms, but it never hurts to be safe once you start getting older.

A prostate cancer prognosis can be a scary thing for any man, even if you’re very strong when it comes to other areas in your life. Not only is it scary for you, but your family suffers from uncertainty and fear as well. Prostate cancer usually begins after you’re in your 40’s. For most men, this is usually after they’ve fathered children and even grandchildren. This is why so many people can be affected by your diagnosis. Your family often does not know where to turn for help or guidance. They cannot even know for sure how long you will be with them.

The prostate cancer treatment options for the disease are scary as well. Your family has no idea if you’ll have to go through prostate cancer treatment or even prostate surgery. Sometimes prostate treatment can be very painful and trying for the victim. It is often hard for the family to watch someone go through prostate surgery, chemotherapy and other things. Your prostate cancer treatment can involve many things. There are some treatments that are pleasant and just address prevention and cleansing of the body. Most physicians recommend that prostate cancer sufferers switch to a diet of organic and chemical-free foods. There are also foods known to aide in prostate treatment. Some doctors feel also that relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga can help on a physiological and emotional level. Doctors feel that these practices help tap into the emotional source of your disease.

Meditation and counseling treatments can also help some people deal with their emotions that the diagnosis stirred up inside of them. Sometimes these treatments do not help however, because people are unable to deal with their issues emotionally and just want to focus on being cured by prostate treatment or prostate surgery.
