Patient Stories - Peter, 59

My name is Peter and I am 59 years old. I was referred to Mr Eden in early 2004 after my PSA rose to 7.5. After a biopsy I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and Mr Eden explained what treatment options were available to me.

He recommended surgery as the cancer was diagnosed early and because I was relatively young. Throughout this period I found him to be very professional, patient in explaining the treatment options, helpful and very understanding. After much thought, discussion and following extensive research on the internet I had a laparoscopic prostatectomy done in September 2004.

The treatment I received was excellent. Again, Mr Eden was very helpful and put me at ease during a stressful period. The operation to remove the prostate went well. Recovery was fairly quick and I was out of the hospital in just two days. My catheter was removed 10 days later and I was back to normal 2-3 weeks after the operation. I was able to resume cycling soon after the catheter was removed and able to complete quite long rides after just one month. I had very occasional minor leakage for a short period after the operation but have had no continence problems since. I was fully recovered after just two months. Mr Eden was able to spare the erectile function nerves and while my ability to get an erection is not yet as good as it was before, I can still get one and life in this area seems to be almost normal! My subsequent PSA tests have all been unrecordable.

In summary: a great result. My recovery was faster than I expected, I have never suffered any pain or discomfort and the operation scars are now difficult to see. My activity level on the bike is better than ever. Just three months after the operation I cycled 1,000 miles in Australia and New Zealand. In a few days I'm back out to New Zealand for seven weeks of cycling on both islands, which will include 15 days in the Southern Alps!

”Three weeks after the operation I had an evening in London watching a ballet at the Royal Opera House without any anxiety about getting to a toilet in time, and followed this with nine holes of golf two days later. A remarkable and swift recovery. Having had a very good report on the histology I am convinced that I made the right decision in having surgery, and that the method chosen was excellent...”
