Why Surgery?
'Currently, radical prostatectomy is the only treatment for localised prostate cancer that has shown a cancer-specific survival benefit...in a prospective, randomized trial.'
European Association of Urologists Guidelines on Prostate Cancer, 2008.
Which Surgeon?
The medical literature demonstrates a strong link between surgeon caseload and outcome after radical prostatectomy. In the bar chart below taken from the British Association of Urological Surgeons operations database analysis, I am consultant #71.

Why Robotic Prostatectomy?
open surgery
Traditional radical prostatectomy requires a large, 8-10 inch incision. This commonly results in significant blood loss, a lengthy and uncomfortable recovery and a variable risk of impotence and incontinence.

da Vinci prostatectomy
Radical prostatectomy performed using the da Vinci robot represents the fastest growing treatment for prostate cancer today.
da Vinci Prostatectomy incorporates a robotic surgical system that helps the surgeon to see vital anatomical structures clearly using high definition 3-D magnification and to perform a precise surgical procedure using motion scaling and tremor filtering.
For most patients this approach offers substantially less pain and a much shorter recovery than open prostate surgery. As a minimally invasive procedure, robotic prostatectomy offers several other potential benefits over open prostatectomy, which include:-
 |
Shorter hospital stay |
 |
Less pain |
 |
Less risk of infection |
 |
Less blood loss and transfusions |
 |
Less scarring |
 |
Faster recovery |
 |
Quicker return to normal activities |
